On Friday 13 April, a group of girls from Alperton Community School attended the iamtheCODE London Global Goals Hackathon.
The girls visited the Embassy of Argentina to learn about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), practice ‘design thinking’ and develop their ideas to achieve the SDGs using technology and code.
The aim was to inspire the next generation of young women to address STEAMD (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Arts and Design) skills and to work towards economic empowerment and inclusion through technology.
Mariéme Jamme, founder of iamtheCODE, and Renato Carlos Sersale di Cerisano, Argentina’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, welcomed the next generation of female coders in the UK, sharing their journeys and empowering our students to make a difference and change the world.
The girls that attended the event came from a range of schools across London. Each team – 11 in total – picked SDG challenges including Quality Education, Gender Equality and Climate Action. Then, they used technology to create and present a solution.
Our girls gave inspiring presentations, with one of our teams coming runner-up in the competition for their presentation on Gender Equality and their route to change.
