This week Alperton Community School staff and students participated to the UN Junior GEL Summit 2018, held at the UN Headquarters, Geneva, Switzerland. The event was organised by the Wildhearts charity in collaboration with the prestigious International School of Geneva.
Ten of our Year 12 and 13 students along with 2 members of staff travelled to Switzerland to attend the summit, which was organised to allow students to learn about and to take action towards achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set at the UN Sustainable Development Summit of World Leaders in 2015.
At the summit, the students heard from a variety of speakers, such as Alessandra Vellucci – Director of the United Nations Information Service, Princess Zahra Aga Khan, Elizabeth Nyamayaro – Senior advisor to Under Nations and numerous CEOs from large companies. The students had the opportunity to also collaborate with their peers from London and abroad, deciding on some of the actions that they will be working on their return to school.
Our students will be launching the Micro-Tyco competition which will incorporate all they have learnt from the summit and will enable their peers to benefit from their experiences.
As a special treat for the students, the International School had also organised a visit to CERN – high-energy particle physics organisation, headquartered in Geneva. This was an amazing opportunity for our students who thoroughly enjoyed learning about the ins and outs of the “Large Hadron Collidor”.
Our students’ behaviour and engagement was exemplary and they received high praise for their efforts from the dignitaries who presented and facilitated the workshops at the summit and members of the Wildhearts Team.
