On Friday 10 February novelist Jyoti Patel visited the school to run creative writing workshops with students from Years 9 and 10. She spoke inspirationally about her life and motivation, and on the power of representation in art and literature, encouraging students to use writing as a way to honour their lived experiences.
Jyoti is a recipient of the Merky Books New Writers’ Prize – an award for unpublished, underrepresented writers, founded by Stormzy. Her novel The Things That We Lost is set in Wembley, and tells the story of 18-year-old British-Gujarati Nik and his mother Avani. It is a powerful exploration of family, loss and love.
