We were excited to host a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) workshop for our Year 13 chemistry students, led by Peter Hoare, the Chemistry Outreach Officer from Newcastle University. This workshop, developed by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), brought advanced spectroscopic techniques into our classroom. Students had the opportunity to use a real infrared (IR) spectrometer and analyze NMR spectra, which helped them apply their classroom knowledge to real-life problem-solving.

Peter guided the students through the principles of IR spectroscopy, NMR, and mass spectrometry, demonstrating how chemists utilize these techniques in fields such as medicine, forensics, and materials science. The students collaborated to interpret spectroscopic data and identify unknown compounds—an experience that both challenged and inspired them.

“Working with real spectroscopic data and equipment was amazing; it helped everything make sense.” – Year 13 Chemistry Student

“Peter’s workshop brought university-level chemistry into our classroom. The hands-on learning and clear explanations had a significant impact on our students’ understanding of this complex topic.” – Year 13 Chemistry Teacher

This experience not only supported our curriculum but also ignited interest in chemistry-related degrees and careers.  We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Peter Hoare and Newcastle University for their support and dedication to science education.
